Mind and Machine

When systems understand us without a word wasted, they become an extension of the mind.

A leaf skeleton against the light: a fine web of veins

Why this matters to me

I work with AI agents every day and watch the line between my thinking and the tool grow thinner.

Not long ago, a computer simply executed commands. Today it understands intention: you can explain a task in words, show a sketch, argue about a solution. This website, for example, was designed and reviewed by a team of AI agents I put together for my work.

What fascinates me is not the technology itself but what it does to people. If a system remembers everything I know, points out connections I don't see and calculates consequences better than I do, where does my mind end?

Questions I ask myself

Where does your mind end and the tool begin?

What would you come up with if you had a conversation partner who remembers everything?

Whom would you trust to calculate the consequences of your decisions?

What would the mind of many people connected by one system be like?

I ask myself these whenever I put together another system of agents. So far, the answers change every six months.

The near horizon: something like Jarvis

A system that understands voice and gestures in real time, keeps context in memory and helps you invent: it breaks an idea down, looks for weak spots, gathers information and presents it in a way a person with limited attention can actually take in.

This is no longer science fiction. Parts of such a system already work today; the task is to build them around the person, not around advertising and attention retention.

A machine that sees further

People are bad at calculating consequences: we keep a few steps in our heads, while our decisions affect years and thousands of people. AI already helps model complex systems and show where a choice leads.

For me, this is an argument when I talk with skeptics. If people are hard to change because they can't see past their own fear, then tools that see further change the terms of the problem.

A tool that sees the consequences makes sensible behavior easier than habitual behavior.

The far horizon: shaping your surroundings with thought

Neural interfaces already let people with paralysis type and move a cursor by thought alone. I imagine the next step: you think that you want the lights dimmed, and they dim, because the system has correctly read both the signal and the intention.

There are many open questions here — privacy, safety, who owns brain data. I see them as part of this direction, not an obstacle to it.

Collective intelligence

The most interesting part begins when many people are connected to one system. Knowledge stops getting stuck in individual heads, and ideas find the people who need them faster. This is both a technical question and a question of how people reach agreement without a center that controls everyone.

Horizons

Not a forecast, but the direction I want to move in

Now

Systems understand voice and gestures and help you write code, search and invent. Teams of AI agents take over the routine and leave the vision to people.

Nearer

An AI assistant knows the context of your life and work and calculates the consequences of your decisions. Non-invasive neural interfaces arrive in everyday devices.

Far

External systems become an extension of the mind: your surroundings respond to intention. People think together while remaining themselves.

Books

  • «The Singularity Is Near» Ray Kurzweil It taught me to reckon the future in exponentials instead of guessing it with an intuition that is used to straight lines.
  • «Superintelligence» Nick Bostrom The most serious conversation about the risks. If you build systems smarter than yourself, you need to think about the consequences in advance.
  • «Life 3.0» Max Tegmark What a future with strong AI might look like and which decisions need to be made in advance.
